I stole this idea from one of our unit members because it pretty good and accurate.

Your Impression has 3 levels:

1. Boot Level:
Bare bones minimum so that you can attend events.

2. Veteran Level:
You get all the needed gear and some of the extra stuff.

3. Expert Level:
You have all the best gear available, and all the extras to have a most perfect impression.

Most of us start at number 1, move into number 2, and some of us get close to number 3. The thing is that we should strive to constantly improve our impressions. We do so as we can afford to do so. Each impression you do as a reenactor should do justice to the memory of those who served. Please make sure you focus on your primary impression first, then it's ok to do a second one. It would not be very good to be a number 1 in 4 impressions. It is better to be a high 2 on your primary impression and then work on a secondary one. What is really nice is when you feel you have achieved 2 on more then one impression. As far as I am concerned, you do the best you can, and that counts for something as long as surpass the bare bones level of a number one for a secondary impression. Thoughts? Ideas? Opinions? All are welcomed. This is not policy, it is only my opinion.

Mike,

Good post and good points. We all have a primary and should max that one out. Secondary (and third and fourth) are great but should not impinge on the first one.

I am enjoying researching and getting ready for this one. It's a complete sea change and gets me back into the fun.

I am enjoying this also. I have 3 impressions myself. I am in the high 2 area on my main one. I am in the mid level 2 area on my second one, and a low 2 on my third one. My second and third impressions only get used two or three times a year, so there is more time to find items at good prices. It's always a work in progress. Things wear out or are upgraded as I can afford it.

Awesome. Like I said before, it's always a work in progress. About the time that you think you have everything for a number 3 impression, something wears out or breaks and you have to either make a period repair (the coolest) or get a new one and break it in. I have a spool of heavy khaki thread (origional thread) made for repairing web gear. I bring it in my footlocker to all the events. If anyone has webgear that need to be hand sewed up (most likely a canteen carrier) let me know, and I will loan you a heavy needle and the spool of thread so that you can repair your gear at the event. This is a period great passtime to sit around the fire and eat, "shoot the breeze" (aka exchanging Scuttlebutt) , and repair your gear.

Don't forget!

Level 4: Professional Reenactor. This type of person has no friends, no personal life and shirks women. Most importantly, they consider themselves more "HARDCORE" than the typical reenactor and think they are the end all of knowledge about obscure subjects as Hitler's boot size and Tojo's preference for condoms! Most have a bad attitudes and are generally ignored by all.

Good call Thor. We call these guys "mudsills" in the Civil War community back home. Guys that starve themselves to look like thinned and wearied soldiers and not only is the nickname a term from the ACW itself but supposedly a group actually rolled in the mud to get dirty before an event and stuff...

I suggest Confederates in the Attic for a view on how wild these guys are. But a good and fair look at the ACW in general.

that is good to know. i think all my impressions are on stage one approaching stage two and i got a few things for stage 3 (a stage four should be added for memorizing the information of a soldier you are impersonating.
